On May 17, 2017 Director of Athletics
Troy Tucker announced the hiring of
Alyssa Bonenberger as the new head coach of the Northampton women's basketball program. "We are thrilled that Alyssa accepted our offer to become the next women's head coach at Northampton," remarked Tucker, "I believe her background, personality and familiarity with our program make her a perfect fit to lead this team,"
During her first season at the helm of the Spartans, Bonenberger guided the team to a 17-9 overall record, their 6th consecutive EPAC championship and a berth in the Region XIX Final Four. The Spartans, who finished 10-0 in conference play, earned the #6 seed for Regionals and went on the road and upset 3rd seeded Camden County College to advance to the program's 6th Regional Final Four in nine seasons as a member of the NJCAA. Sophomore Dom Moser broke the all-time scoring record at Northampton, while being named EPAC and Region XIX Player of the Year.
2018-19 was a rebuiliding year for Bonenberger as the young Spartans finished 7-14 overall and 4-6 in conference play. The Spartans qualified for the inaugural EPAC Tournament, falling to eventual champion Philadelphia in the semi-finals.
2019-20 saw the Spartans finish 9-12, including a victory over perennial Region XIX power Brookdale Community College.
During the 2016-17 season Bonenberger served as assistant coach for the Spartans, who finished with an overall record of 19-6, captured their 5th consecutive conference championship and advanced to the Region XIX title game, falling one win short of qualifying for the NJCAA national tournament.
A former standout at Northampton High School, Bonenberger went on to become a four-year starter, and captain, at NCAA Division II Kutztown University, where she graduated in 2015 with a degree in Leisure and Sport Studies.
After Kutztown, Bonenberger served as an assistant coach at East Stroudsburg University, where she helped lead the Warriors to a 15-13 record and a berth in the PSAC quarterfinals.
Bonenberger, who helped guide the Konkrete Kids to the 2010 PIAA District XI championship, is one of only nine girls at Northampton High School to score over 1,000 points in their career.
